WEB STORYTELLING PROGRAMME

Following an exciting and successful storytelling festival in May 2008, the Community Arts Team and East Staffs Storytelling Development worker are helping communities around the borough bring storytelling to life. We are working with Abbot Beyne school on a Young Storytellers project and also with ESOL learners in a range of community centres, sharing stories from a range of world cultures. Tales from the Bridge, Burton Upon Trent's story circle meet every second Tuesday at the Bridge Inn and all are welcome to either share a tale or simply listen to the other stories on offer. This Autumn many more projects and activities are in the pipeline, including events in Uttoxeter, more storytelling in schools and a World in Stories Story Sharing at Burton upon Trent Library on Saturday 18 October, featuring storyteller Sef Townsend.

The Milky Way - Stories of Nordic Nights with Mats Rehnman
Saturday 22nd. November 2008 at 7.30pm - £6 (£4 concessions)

Sweden's top Storyteller Mats Rehnman takes you on a journey to the heart of Lapland where heathen gods still swarm beyond the churches and wheregiants, witches and ghosts are hiding in endless forests. In the beginning and in the end of life, the most stunning miracles might take place. This is the story of a very old man in a small village in Lapland, and of a very young boy, the becoming storyteller listening to his grandfather's amazing stories from the past about witches, magic and ghosts. Life stories interweave with traditional stories of Scandinavian mythology and folklore. It's a labyrinth of dangerous and humorous turns, taking you to the warm heart of the cold North.

Storyteller Mats Rehnman has performed since the mid-eighties and has a personal approach weaving myth and life into a whole. He is often seen as guest and performer on international storytelling festivals from Teheran to Toronto. In Scandinavia he is also known as an educator, writer and artist. Mats has taken part in the development of storytelling in Sweden as organizer of the Fabula Storytelling Festival in Stockholm, and also building the national organization for storytellers, BNS. Don't miss this chance to enjoy stories which you won't hear everyday!

Music for the Masses

Music for the Masses was launched in September 2007 after East Staffordshire Community Arts Team was awarded an Arts Council England Grant to give  opportunities to young people to experience music making. Work started with music sessions in schools around Burton upon Trent, recruiting young people interested in playing music together. Talented local musicians shadowed more experienced music leaders and together they began after-school clubs in seven schools around the town. The trainees are now successfully leading the clubs and the project has become a great success with over 100 young people involved in music making every week.

There will also be two end-of-project performances at the Brewhouse on Wednesday 4th. & Thursday 5th. February 2009 for all Music for the Masses participants.

TINY TALES FROM WINSHILL

Earlier this year Arts East Staffs: Community Team and Staffordshire Library Service ran a series of storytelling and visual arts activities, workshops and training for pre-school children, parents and early years workers in Winshill. Storyteller Maria Whatton and Visual Artist Isobel Pickup worked with people of all ages in Winshill to promote storytelling and creativity as a family learning activity.

Family Learning: Maria Whatton told fun stories and Isobel Pickup led creative activities linked to the themes of the stories. Parents and children took part in these activities together.

Storytelling Training Sessions: Parents and volunteers working in Parent and Toddler groups took part in training sessions where they developed their storytelling skills and built their confidence in telling stories to adults and children.

Story Quilt Sessions: Some of the participants worked with Isobel and Maria to devise, design and create a beautiful interactive story quilt that will stay in Winshill and be used by groups and families to help them enjoy stories together.
