Brewhouse 30th Anniversary – Artist Commissions

Commission 1 - Venue Installation

The Brewhouse Arts Centre is celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year. To celebrate we are seeking to commission an artist to create a new installation for our venue. The work must be community focused and tell the story of the Brewhouse Arts Centre. The new work will be presented at the venue, and/or online during our 30th Anniversary celebrations.

Introduction:

The Brewhouse arts centre is a focal point for the arts both within Burton and throughout the Borough. The venue is run by East Staffordshire Borough Council (ESBC).

We deliver a range of workshops and events, house a diverse live theatre programme as well as being home to a number of fantastic creative community groups. We are constantly striving to re-invigorate the Brewhouse, attract new audiences and find ways to secure its future as a vibrant and relevant multi-arts centre.

Project Brief:

We want to commission a new installation during our 30th Anniversary celebrations to enhance the Brewhouse and tell the story of our venue and communities.

We have a programme of events and activities planned throughout 2021 to celebrate the Brewhouse’s 30th birthday! Therefore, we are looking for an artist(s) to work with the Brewhouse Arts Team who can create an artwork/installation that will transform the Brewhouse and celebrate the venue, its people and history, and the many cultural activities and events that have taken place at the venue during the last 30 years.

The final artwork is to be installed during our 30th year. The work can be abstract or realistic, there can be lots of small installations or one large one; whatever your proposal we want it to provide a visual spectacle for our customers.

We would also like proposals where possible to be family focused, encourage engagement, or to tell a story and to share the creative and development process online via the Brewhouse website and social media platforms.

We also require the installation to either be permanent/semi-permanent or easy to take down and install (or more regularly if adaptable for other events).

Outputs:

  • Installation of the artwork in the Brewhouse Cafe Bar area
  • Online engagement with Brewhouse audiences through sharing of creative process/research etc.

Timescale:

28 February - Application Deadline

15 March - Successful artist notified

May - Artwork installed

Fee:

Up to £2500

Fee must cover all costs associated with the commission as outlined above. Fee is also inclusive of VAT, Subsistence, travel, materials etc.

The Brewhouse may be able to source some materials and support with additional resources such as printing in addition to this fee.

Application/Selection Process:

  • Expression of Interest/Statement – outlining your approach to the theme (max 500 words)
  • C.V.
  • Examples of previous work and experience

Send via email to owen.hurcombe@eaststaffsbc.gov.uk

NB: Artists must be self-employed and have an up-to-date DBS. As Freelancers, artists are responsible for their own tax, national insurance contributions, public liability and professional indemnity insurance and must adhere to the requirements, rights and responsibilities as set out by the terms of the contract with ESBC.

Commission 2 - Mini Activities Content

Project Brief:

We want to offer up to 30 ‘mini’ commissions to artists and makers, to take part in our 30th anniversary celebrations to enhance the Brewhouse and tell the story of our venue and communities.

We have a programme of events and activities planned throughout 2021 to celebrate the Brewhouse’s 30th birthday! Therefore, we are looking for 30 artists to work with the Brewhouse Arts Team who can create artworks and activities that will encourage people to creatively take part in our celebrations; share stories about the Brewhouse, the venue, its people and history, and the many cultural activities and events that have taken place at the venue during the last 30 years.

The activities / artworks will be specifically designed to be shared online during our 30th anniversary celebrations. The activities can be abstract, realistic, and of any discipline. Whatever your proposal we want it to celebrate our wider creative sector and where possible to be family focused, encourage engagement, or to tell a story.

We would especially like to hear from artists that have a connection to The Brewhouse and/or East Staffordshire but welcome all applications.
