Our Freedom Then & Now – Tin-type Portraits by Jo Gane

Artist Jo Gane will be running a free pop-up portrait studio using the historic tin-type process to make 5 x 7-inch portrait plates on black aluminium. The tin-type process, also known as wet plate collodion, was commonly used by itinerant photographers in the UK and during the American civil war era from 1851- 1870. Jo Gane uses period cameras and materials to make authentic tin-type portraits which sparks conversations about our history and memories.

The portraits that are made will be used by Open Eye gallery, Liverpool and Future Arts Centres for a touring exhibition that takes place in 2026. By taking part, you are agreeing to the sharing of your portrait as part of the Our Freedom: Then & Now Project. Following this exhibition, your portrait plates will be available to collect from the Brewhouse Arts Centre or the Brewery Heritage Centre.

Each portrait plate is a unique object, developed onsite, that takes around 30 minutes to make, from coating the plate to developing and varnishing it.

There are places available from 10am until 1.30pm. Places are limited, please drop in on the day to reserve your spot.
